Pune to Navi Mumbai Airport (NMIA): Complete Travel Guide

Navi Mumbai International Airport is coming — and when it does, Pune travellers will gain a meaningful alternative to the long haul into Santacruz. This guide covers the route, how long it realistically takes, what to know about the new airport, and how to plan your cab booking. Timelines for NMIA are still evolving, so this guide sticks to what is known and flags what may change.

Status as of April 2026: NMIA is under construction at Ulwe, Navi Mumbai. Phase 1 limited operations are expected to commence in 2026. Airline allocations and terminal procedures are not yet finalised. Verify with your airline and CIDCO before travelling.

Why NMIA Is a Big Deal for Pune Travellers

Pune's relationship with Mumbai's airport has always been inconvenient. The current Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSIA) at Santacruz sits deep inside Mumbai — which means Pune travellers must cross not just the Expressway but also navigate 30–40 km of city traffic through Sion, Kurla, or the Western Express Highway to reach the terminal. On a bad traffic day, a Pune-to-CSIA journey can stretch to 4.5 hours.

NMIA changes the geometry. Located at Ulwe on the south-eastern edge of Navi Mumbai, the airport sits right off the Sion-Panvel Expressway — meaning Pune travellers exit the Expressway, take a short stretch of the Sion-Panvel Highway to Panvel, then follow the Uran Road into Ulwe. No city crossing, no signal-ridden suburban roads.

Factor CSIA (Current Mumbai Airport) NMIA (Navi Mumbai Airport)
Distance from Pune ~250 km (including city roads) ~165 km (mostly expressway)
Drive time (early morning) 3.5 – 4 hrs 2.5 – 3 hrs
Drive time (peak hours) 4 – 5+ hrs 3 – 3.5 hrs
Mumbai city traffic involved Yes — 30–40 km through suburbs No — bypasses Mumbai city
Expressway used Pune-Mumbai Expressway + Western/Eastern Freeway Pune-Mumbai Expressway + Sion-Panvel Expressway
Cab fare from Pune (approx) ₹3,200 – ₹3,700 ₹3,500 – ₹4,000 (est.)
Airport status Fully operational Opening Phase 1 in 2026

Distance figures are approximate. NMIA saves significant time primarily by eliminating the Mumbai suburban road stretch — not just road distance alone.

The Route: Pune to Navi Mumbai Airport

The journey from Pune to NMIA uses two expressways end-to-end, which is one of its biggest advantages. There is no Mumbai city driving involved. Here is the route segment by segment.

1
Pune (your pickup location) 0 min

Cab picks you up at your door. No need to reach a cab stand or deal with early morning app availability.

2
Expressway entry — Katraj or Chandni Chowk 15–25 min

Your starting location determines the entry point. Hinjewadi/Wakad/Baner travellers typically use Chandni Chowk entry. Kothrud, Sinhagad Road, Warje use Katraj. Kharadi/Viman Nagar/Hadapsar come via Hadapsar flyover or Katraj bypass.

3
Pune-Mumbai Expressway (NH48) — 94 km 55–65 min

The bulk of the journey. Well-maintained, 110 km/h speed limit, consistent flow especially before 7 AM. Four tunnels including the Khopoli descent. EV performs quietly and efficiently at highway speed.

4
Khopoli / Khalapur toll plaza

EVs are exempt from toll charges on the Expressway — zero toll for GreenEVCabs vehicles. Petrol/diesel cabs pay ₹335–₹435 here, which gets passed on to you in quoted fares.

5
Khopoli exit → Sion-Panvel Expressway (NH4B) +20–30 min

After descending the ghat, the route joins the Sion-Panvel Expressway. This 30 km stretch connects Khopoli to Panvel. Traffic is generally light except for industrial vehicle movement near Kharghar and Taloja.

6
Panvel interchange +10–15 min

At Panvel, the route diverges from the Sion-Panvel Highway toward Uran Road (also called Palm Beach Road extension). This is the approach to the Ulwe node where NMIA sits. Signage to the airport will be clearly marked once it opens.

7
Ulwe Node → NMIA terminal +15–20 min

The final 10–12 km from Panvel to the airport boundary. Roads in this zone are being built to accommodate airport traffic. Expect controlled access roads leading to departure drop-off.

8
NMIA — Departure drop-off Arrived

Cab drops you at the terminal entrance. No city navigation, no parking hunt. Total from Pune: approximately 2.5 to 3.5 hours depending on time of day.

Total distance: ~165 km. Of this, roughly 125 km is on expressways (Pune-Mumbai Expressway + Sion-Panvel Expressway). The remaining 40 km is city/approach roads in Pune and the Ulwe access road. This expressway-heavy route is why Pune-to-NMIA drive times are much more predictable than Pune-to-CSIA.

When to Leave Pune — By Flight Departure Time

Allow at least 2.5 hours at the airport before a domestic flight (3 hours for international) during early operations. Add your drive time on top. The table below uses 2.5 hours airport buffer for domestic and assumes a Kothrud / Baner area departure — add 15 minutes for Hadapsar, Kharadi, or Nagar Road.

Flight Time Leave Pune By Airport By Traffic Conditions
6:00 AM 1:30 – 2:00 AM 4:00 – 4:30 AM Pre-dawn run. Clear Expressway. Fastest of all slots.
9:00 AM 4:00 – 4:30 AM 6:30 – 7:00 AM Early morning, minimal traffic. Very reliable window.
12:00 PM (noon) 7:00 – 7:30 AM 9:30 – 10:00 AM Expressway traffic builds after 7 AM. Sion-Panvel may have trucks.
3:00 PM 10:00 – 10:30 AM 12:30 – 1:00 PM Mid-morning, usually manageable. Panvel junction can slow.
6:00 PM 1:00 – 1:30 PM 3:30 – 4:00 PM Afternoon. Expressway is clear but Kharghar can have traffic.
9:00 PM 4:30 – 5:00 PM 7:00 – 7:30 PM Pune evening rush (Hinjewadi, Baner) — leave before 5 PM.
12:00 AM (midnight) 8:00 – 8:30 PM 10:30 – 11:00 PM Night departure. Expressway clear. Add 30 min buffer for late fog in winter.

Times assume a 2.5-hour airport buffer (domestic). Add 30 minutes for international flights. During the first months of NMIA operations, queues may be slower — add a further 30 minutes to be safe. Departure times based on central/western Pune (Kothrud, Baner, Hinjewadi). Add 15–20 minutes for eastern Pune (Hadapsar, Kharadi, Nagar Road).

What to Know About NMIA Before You Travel

NMIA is a brand-new airport. Unlike CSIA — which has been in operation for decades and has well-worn routines — NMIA will be finding its rhythm in Phase 1. Here is what is known and what to keep in mind.

Check-in timing

New airports in India have typically run slower check-in processes in the first months as staff and systems bed in. Arrive at least 2.5 hours before domestic flights and 3 hours before international. Do not assume NMIA will run as smoothly as CSIA on day one.

Terminal layout (Phase 1)

NMIA Phase 1 is expected to have a single integrated terminal handling both domestic and international departures. Specific airline check-in counters, gate assignments, and lounge details will be confirmed as airlines announce operations.

Airlines and routes

Route allocations are not officially published as of April 2026. Major carriers (IndiGo, Air India, Akasa) are expected to operate from NMIA, but your booking confirmation will specify the departure airport. Double-check — some airlines may split operations between CSIA and NMIA during the transition period.

Ground transport at NMIA

No Metro connectivity to NMIA is planned for Phase 1. Road access will be via the Uran Road / Palm Beach Road from Panvel. Taxi and cab pickup zones will be designated at the arrivals level. Ola/Uber may have limited driver availability at NMIA initially — pre-booked cabs are strongly recommended, especially for return journeys from the airport to Pune.

Parking

Multi-level and surface parking is planned at NMIA. Parking tariffs will be set once the airport opens. If driving yourself, factor in parking cost on top of fuel. For a Pune-NMIA round trip, a pre-booked cab often works out similarly priced to self-drive once toll and parking are counted.

NMIA vs CSIA: verify before you go

During the early phase of NMIA operations, some airlines may operate the same route from both CSIA and NMIA on different days or at different times. Always verify your ticket — specifically the airport code (NMI for NMIA vs BOM for CSIA). Going to the wrong Mumbai airport is a common risk during any new airport's ramp-up.

Cab Booking: Fixed Fare vs App-Based Surge

For CSIA, Ola and Uber have years of driver supply at the airport — enough to make them viable if you are flexible on fare. NMIA is different. In early operations, driver availability on apps at Ulwe will be limited. Surge pricing for a pre-dawn 3 AM pickup from Pune to an unfamiliar new airport — on a route most app drivers will not be familiar with — is a genuine risk.

Ola / Uber Risks for NMIA

  • Surge pricing at 3–5 AM — often 2× to 3× the base fare
  • Few drivers will know the Ulwe airport route initially
  • Driver cancellations on unfamiliar long-distance trips
  • Limited return cab availability at NMIA arrivals in early phase
  • No guarantee of fixed fare — quote changes at pickup
  • App may show no drivers at 3 AM for a Pune-NMIA trip

GreenEVCabs — Pre-booked Fixed Fare

  • Fixed ₹3,500 (MG Windsor EV) or ₹4,000 (Kia Carens EV) — confirmed on booking
  • Driver knows the NMIA Ulwe route — no navigation guesswork
  • Pickup at your door at the agreed time, no app uncertainty
  • No surge at 3 AM, 4 AM, or any time
  • Return booking arranged — no hunting for cabs at NMIA arrivals
  • All tolls included — EV toll-exempt on Expressway means no hidden add-ons
Vehicle Seats Fare (Pune–NMIA) Includes
MG Windsor EV 5 passengers ₹3,500 Tolls, GST, driver
Kia Carens EV 6 passengers ₹4,000 Tolls, GST, driver, extra luggage space

Fares are estimates for Pune central / western areas. Confirm exact fare at booking. Return journey (NMIA to Pune) is the same fixed price.

Practical Tips for Pune–NMIA Travel

🌙

No surge at 3 AM

GreenEVCabs does not apply surge pricing at any hour. Whether your flight is at 6 AM (requiring a 2 AM pickup) or 11 PM, the fare is identical. This matters most for early morning flights — the most common domestic departure slots.

📱

Book the night before

WhatsApp booking takes 2 minutes. Confirm your flight time, pickup location, and passenger count the night before. You receive confirmation and driver details — no scrambling at 4 AM to find a cab.

🧳

Luggage space

MG Windsor EV comfortably fits 2 large suitcases + cabin bags. Kia Carens EV handles 3–4 large bags. If you are travelling with family (4–6 people + luggage), Kia Carens EV is the better fit — confirm at booking.

🔌

EV on the Expressway

Both vehicles (MG Windsor, Kia Carens EV) complete the Pune–NMIA trip on a single charge. No mid-trip charging stops. Unlike diesel cabs, there are no fuel stops on the Expressway that add 10–15 minutes.

🗺️

NMIA access roads

In Phase 1, NMIA access will be via Uran Road from Panvel. This road will be clearly signed. Your driver will have navigated this route before your trip — expect no confusion at the last stretch.

🔄

Return trips from NMIA

Pre-book your return when you book the outbound trip. Driver will track your flight and arrive accordingly. Arranging a Pune-bound cab at NMIA arrivals on-the-spot (via app) will be difficult in early months.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is Navi Mumbai Airport (NMIA) from Pune?

NMIA at Ulwe is approximately 160–170 km from central Pune via the Pune-Mumbai Expressway and the Sion-Panvel Expressway. This is about 30% closer than CSIA (Santacruz airport), which sits 250 km from Pune when accounting for Mumbai city roads.

How long does the drive from Pune to NMIA take?

2.5 to 3.5 hours depending on the time of day. Early morning departures (before 5 AM) typically complete in 2.5 hours. Mid-morning and afternoon departures may take 3 to 3.5 hours as Sion-Panvel traffic builds. The route avoids Mumbai city entirely, which makes timings much more predictable than a Pune-to-CSIA journey.

What is the cab fare from Pune to NMIA?

GreenEVCabs charges ₹3,500 (MG Windsor EV) or ₹4,000 (Kia Carens EV) for Pune to NMIA — all-inclusive with tolls and GST. No surge pricing regardless of departure time. The same fare applies for night or early morning pickups.

Is NMIA open? Has it started operations?

As of April 2026, NMIA is under construction and expected to open Phase 1 in 2026 with limited operations. Exact opening dates and airline allocations have not been publicly confirmed. Always check with CIDCO and your airline before making NMIA-specific travel plans.

What is the route from Pune to NMIA?

Pune → Pune-Mumbai Expressway (NH48) → Khopoli → Sion-Panvel Expressway (NH4B) → Panvel → Uran Road → Ulwe → NMIA. Approximately 165 km, with 125 km on expressways and the rest on city/approach roads.

Will Ola/Uber serve NMIA from Pune?

Ola and Uber will eventually serve NMIA, but driver availability at Ulwe will be limited during Phase 1. For early flights from Pune requiring 2–3 AM pickups, app-based cabs carry surge pricing and cancellation risk. A pre-booked fixed-fare cab from GreenEVCabs is far more reliable — especially in the first year of NMIA operations.
