Pune-Mumbai Expressway: Complete Passenger Guide (Tolls, Stops, Tips)
For most passengers, the Pune–Mumbai Expressway is something that happens outside the window. This guide gives you the full picture — distances, tolls, what the stops are like, the tricky ghat section, and what to do if you hit a jam.
The Route at a Glance
Officially designated NH48, the Mumbai-Pune Expressway opened in 2002 and was India's first six-lane, access-controlled expressway. It runs from Pune's Dehu Road end to the Khopoli area before switching to the old NH4 alignment into Mumbai through Thane and the Eastern Freeway.
The full journey from central Pune (say, Shivajinagar or Kothrud) to South Mumbai or BKC is approximately 155–165 km including city roads at both ends. From Wakad or Hinjewadi, the expressway access is a few kilometres closer, which can save 15–20 minutes of city driving.
Toll Plazas and Costs
There are three toll collection points for a Pune-to-Mumbai journey by car or cab:
| Toll Plaza | Location | Distance from Pune | Car/Cab Toll (one-way) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Khalapur | Main expressway plaza | ~70 km | ₹315 |
| Khopoli | Near expressway end | ~85 km | ₹155 |
| Mumbai Entry | Eastern Freeway / Airoli | ~145 km | ₹55–75 (varies) |
| Total | — | — | ₹530–580 |
GreenEVCabs includes all tolls in the ₹2,700 flat fare. Our vehicles use FASTag, so there's no stopping to hand over cash at any plaza.
Food and Rest Stops
Most Pune–Mumbai trips in a cab take under 3 hours, so a formal stop isn't essential. But if you have kids, or just want a chai or restroom break, here are the main options:
Khopoli Food Plaza (~45 min from Pune)
The first major stop on the expressway. Has a McDonald's, a couple of local options, and clean restrooms. Good if you left Pune very early without breakfast. Fuel pumps here too.
Lonavala Area (~55 min from Pune)
The most popular stop. The expressway service road near Lonavala has several dhabas and cafes. The famous chikki (local sweet) is sold here. McDonald's and Café Coffee Day are also present. Restrooms are reasonable — McDonald's is the cleanest option. Worth noting: pulling off at Lonavala adds 10–15 minutes to your journey but is genuinely pleasant.
Khalapur Food Plaza (~80 min from Pune)
A large food court with 10+ food options — the most variety on the route. Located just before the Khalapur toll. Good restroom facilities. A convenient stop if you're travelling with elderly passengers or children who need a proper break.
Practical tip: Tell the GreenEVCabs driver at the start if you'd like a stop and roughly where. They know every layby on the route and will pull off whenever you need.
The Khalapur Ghat Section — What to Expect
The most talked-about section of the expressway is the Khalapur ghat — a 10-km stretch where the highway descends the Western Ghats into the coastal lowlands. From the Pune side, you're driving uphill if you're heading to Mumbai; from the Mumbai side, it's a descent.
Key things to know as a passenger:
- It's two lanes each way, narrower than the rest of the expressway, with concrete median barriers. Overtaking opportunities are limited, and trucks slow down noticeably on the incline.
- Speed limits drop to 60 km/h through the ghat section (from 100 km/h on the open expressway). Enforcement cameras are present.
- Visibility can be poor in monsoon (June–September) — clouds and mist often settle on the ghats at this altitude. Experienced drivers slow down significantly. If you're travelling in monsoon, allow an extra 20–30 minutes for the ghat section.
- The views are excellent on a clear day. The ghat section is genuinely scenic — green valleys, the Ulhas River valley below, and the Mumbai skyline appearing in the distance as you descend.
If trucks are moving slowly through the ghat, your driver may be stuck behind them for 5–10 minutes before a passing opportunity. This is normal and not a cause for concern.
What to Do If There's a Traffic Jam
Expressway jams are usually caused by accidents or overturned trucks. Unlike city traffic, they can come to a complete stop for 30–90 minutes if an accident blocks lanes.
If you hit a jam mid-expressway, your options as a passenger are limited — you're on an access-controlled highway with no exits until the next interchange. The best approach:
- Stay calm. Most expressway jams clear within 30–60 minutes once the incident is moved.
- Your driver will monitor real-time traffic and may exit at Khopoli or Lonavala to use the old NH4 route if the jam looks severe. This adds 25–40 minutes but keeps you moving.
- If you have a flight to catch, always build in a 60-minute buffer beyond your estimated drive time for Mumbai airport trips.
- Keep snacks and water in the cab for longer journeys — the Kia Carens EV and BYD eMax 7 have USB ports to keep your phone charged while you wait.

All GreenEVCabs drivers are trained to follow posted speed limits and expressway rules. Speed camera violations are the driver's responsibility — not passed to passengers.
Common Passenger Questions
Can the cab driver stop anywhere on the expressway?
No stopping on the expressway itself. The driver can exit at designated interchanges or pull into official service roads/layby areas at rest stops. For a comfort break, tell the driver in advance and they'll plan a stop at Khopoli, Lonavala, or Khalapur.
Is the expressway safe at night?
Yes. The expressway is well-lit and patrolled. Night traffic is lighter and the journey is often faster. GreenEVCabs operates 24 hours — many passengers prefer the 10pm–5am window for its clear roads.
Does my cab fare include all tolls?
With GreenEVCabs, yes. The ₹2,700 Pune-to-Mumbai flat fare covers all expressway tolls and Mumbai entry charges. No extra payment at any booth.
