Pune to Mumbai by Cab with Kids — Family Travel Guide
A 3-hour car journey with young children is entirely manageable — with the right departure time, the right prep, and a vehicle that doesn't add to the stress. Here's what parents who've done this route with us recommend.
The Short Version
Flat ₹2,700 Pune–Mumbai, 7-seater Kia Carens EV. No extra charge for children. Depart at naptime (10–11am) or early morning (5–6am) for the best experience. Bring snacks, downloaded shows, and wet wipes. Request a toilet stop at Khalapur if needed — just mention it at booking.
1. The 3-Hour Challenge — Realistic Framing
Three hours in a car with a 2-year-old requires planning. Let's be direct about that. Done without preparation, it can be the longest 3 hours of your life. Done right — with the right departure time, the right snacks, and a comfortable vehicle — most parents find their toddler sleeps through the majority of the journey.
The good news: the Pune–Mumbai Expressway is a smooth, straight, fast highway. There are no traffic lights, no city traffic (outside the first and last 15 minutes), and minimal stopping. This is one of the easier long-distance cab journeys in India for young children.
2. Why the EV Cabin Is Better for Children
No diesel fumes. This matters most for babies and toddlers, whose lungs are still developing. Even in a well-maintained diesel cab, fumes enter the cabin. An electric vehicle produces zero exhaust — the air inside the Kia Carens EV cabin is genuinely cleaner than a diesel cab.
Quiet = easier for napping. The electric motor is near-silent at highway speeds. A sleeping toddler stays asleep. In a diesel cab, the constant engine drone is a sleep disruptor — especially for light sleepers under 3 years old.
Smooth ride = less motion sickness. The heavy battery floor of an EV provides additional vibration dampening. Children who get carsick on ordinary roads often do significantly better in an EV on the Expressway.
3. Best Departure Times for Young Children
Naptime departure (10am–12pm). For toddlers who nap after lunch — departing at 10–11am means they'll fall asleep within 30–45 minutes of getting on the Expressway and wake up approaching Mumbai. This is the most recommended approach for children aged 1–3.
Early morning (5–6am). Young children often sleep in the car during early mornings — they're still in semi-sleep mode. A 5am departure means you're on the Expressway by 5:30am and in Mumbai by 8:30am, before the child is fully awake and restless.
Avoid: 2–4pm. This is overtired toddler territory. A child who's missed their nap or is at the end of their energy window in a confined space is very difficult. If you have any flexibility on timing, avoid mid-afternoon departures with children under 4.
4. What to Pack for Kids
5. Car Seat Note
GreenEVCabs does not provide child car seats. If your child requires one, bring your own portable car seat and mention it when you WhatsApp to book. This lets the driver plan the rear seat arrangement.
The Kia Carens EV has standard ISOFIX anchors and seat belt points in the rear seats. A standard portable car seat will fit. If you're unsure, send us your car seat model when booking and we'll confirm compatibility.
6. The 7-Seater for Families
The Kia Carens EV is a 7-seater, which gives families genuine space. Two families can share a single cab and split the ₹2,700 fare — making it considerably cheaper than booking two separate cabs.
Children don't have a separate seat count, but 7 adults is the maximum capacity. A family of 4 adults and 2 children would occupy the cab comfortably with room for luggage in the boot.
The generous legroom in the Kia Carens EV means children can move around more than in a compact sedan — an important difference on a 3-hour journey.
7. Toilet Stops
Unlike petrol or diesel cabs, the Kia Carens EV does not require a charging stop on the Pune–Mumbai route — it has a 400km range, well in excess of the 150km journey. The vehicle won't be stopping at a charging station.
However, for young children, a toilet stop may be necessary. If you think you'll need one, mention it at booking. The driver will stop at either the Khalapur or Khopoli petrol station, both of which have clean toilet facilities. A stop adds approximately 15–20 minutes to the journey.
For children who are toilet training, it's worth bringing a portable travel potty or travel pants as backup regardless — a 3-hour journey with a 2-year-old in training is unpredictable.
Common Questions
Does GreenEVCabs provide child car seats?
No — bring your own portable car seat and mention it at booking. The Kia Carens EV has ISOFIX anchors and standard seat belt points. The driver will plan the seating arrangement if you inform us in advance.
Is the EV journey smoother for children than a diesel cab?
Yes — quieter, vibration-free, no exhaust smell. Most toddlers fall asleep within 30 minutes on the Expressway. The absence of diesel engine noise and fumes is especially important for babies and young children.
Can we make a toilet stop during the journey?
Yes — mention it at booking if you'll likely need one. The driver stops at Khalapur or Khopoli petrol station, both of which have clean facilities. A stop adds 15–20 minutes to the total journey time.
What's the best departure time for a 3-year-old?
10–11am if they nap midday — they'll sleep through most of the journey. Or 5–6am if they sleep in the car during early mornings. Avoid 2–4pm when overtired toddlers are at their most difficult in confined spaces.
