What to Expect in an Electric Cab from Pune to Mumbai

If you've never traveled in an EV before, the Pune–Mumbai route is a great introduction. Here's exactly what the experience is like — from the moment you get in to the moment you arrive.

The short version for first-timers

The Kia Carens EV has a 400+ km real-world range. Pune to Mumbai is 155–165 km. You will not need a charging stop. The car starts fully charged. You'll arrive in Mumbai with roughly 60% battery remaining.

A lot of passengers booking GreenEVCabs for the first time have the same underlying question: "Is this actually going to be different from a regular cab?"

The honest answer is: yes, noticeably. The biggest difference is the quiet. Diesel engines vibrate and rumble at motorway speeds in ways you stop noticing until they're gone. In an EV, the drivetrain is silent — you can have a conversation at normal volume the entire way, kids can sleep without being rattled awake, and long conference calls from the backseat are entirely practical.

Here's the full picture of what to expect.

The Cabin: Quiet, Smooth, and Well-Equipped

Kia Carens EV (7-seater)

  • Three rows of seating — 2 front, 3 middle, 2 rear
  • Large panoramic sunroof standard
  • USB-C and USB-A charging ports in every row
  • Dual-zone climate control — front and rear
  • Smooth, near-silent cabin at all speeds
  • Boot fits 3–4 large suitcases

BYD eMax 7

  • Premium MPV — similar to Toyota Innova in size
  • Generous legroom across all three rows
  • USB charging ports front and rear
  • Very low floor vibration — smooth electric drive
  • Quieter cabin than most diesel 7-seaters
  • Ideal for 5–7 passengers with carry-on luggage

Both cars are around 2–3 years old in the GreenEVCabs fleet — well-maintained, regularly cleaned, and smelling of nothing in particular (which is itself a novelty after diesel or CNG cabs). The ride quality on the expressway is noticeably better than a diesel SUV because electric drivetrains have no vibration at idle or low speed.

Range and Charging — The Most Common Question

Range anxiety is the most common concern for first-time EV passengers. Let's be direct about the numbers:

~400 km
Kia Carens EV real-world range (full charge)
160 km
Typical Pune to Mumbai distance door-to-door
~60%
Battery remaining on arrival in Mumbai

The route uses approximately 35–40% of the car's full charge. No charging stop is required or planned. GreenEVCabs charges all vehicles fully at the depot before each trip begins — you'll get in a car with 95–100% battery.

The BYD eMax 7 has a similar real-world range of 400–420 km under normal expressway driving conditions. The maths are equally comfortable.

One nuance: AC usage, high speeds (above 90 km/h), and fully loaded vehicles do reduce range slightly. In practice, this has never resulted in a charging stop on the Pune–Mumbai route in GreenEVCabs' operating history.

The Drive Itself

From your Pune pickup, the cab exits the city via the Katraj bypass or Dehu Road depending on your starting point. Once on the expressway, the drive opens up — six lanes, long straights, and the Western Ghat scenery on either side. In an EV, expressway cruising is particularly comfortable: the car operates in a quiet "glide" mode, regenerative braking means you almost never feel the brakes on gradual descents, and the smooth torque delivery makes overtaking effortless.

The most interesting section for most passengers is the Khalapur ghat — a 10-km descent into the coastal lowlands where the landscape changes dramatically from dry Deccan plateau to humid coastal vegetation. On a clear day, you can see the Mumbai suburbs in the distance from the top of the ghat.

After the ghat, the expressway joins the Eastern Freeway into Mumbai, then transitions to city roads depending on your destination. If you're going to Andheri, BKC, or North Mumbai, the cab will use the Eastern Freeway, JVLR, or Western Express Highway depending on real-time traffic.

Luggage Space — Practical Reality

The Kia Carens EV boot (with the third row up) holds 3–4 large airline check-in suitcases comfortably. If you have 2–3 passengers with standard airport luggage, you'll have no problems. For 5–7 passengers all carrying full luggage, let GreenEVCabs know at booking — they'll configure the car accordingly (folding the third row for more boot space, or using the BYD eMax 7 which handles cabin luggage better in the interior).

One practical note for family trips: children's booster seats fit easily in the middle or rear row of both vehicles. If you need a child seat, mention this when booking on WhatsApp and we'll confirm availability.

Family Comfort: Why EV Works Better for Kids

What's better in an EV with kids
  • No diesel smell — better for nausea-prone children
  • Near-silent cabin — kids sleep more easily
  • Smooth acceleration — no jerky gear changes
  • USB charging to keep tablets powered
  • No exhaust at idle — no fumes when stopped in traffic
What stays the same
  • Seatbelts in all rows (same as any car)
  • Air conditioning works identically
  • You can request a stop anytime
  • Same 2.5–3 hour drive time as any cab

First-Timer Questions

Will I hear anything different about the drive?

The biggest difference first-timers notice is the quiet. At expressway speeds you hear wind and road noise, but no engine. It's the kind of environment where you can have a normal conversation or take a phone call without raising your voice.

What if I'm worried about the battery mid-trip?

The battery level is visible on the dashboard display. Your driver is happy to show you the current charge and estimated remaining range at any point. With 400 km of range and a 160 km route, the numbers are very comfortable.

Can I charge my phone in the cab?

Yes. Both the Kia Carens EV and BYD eMax 7 have USB-A and USB-C charging ports available to rear passengers. A 2.5-hour journey is enough to give most phones a full charge.

Does the EV handle the ghat section differently?

Yes — in a good way. On the descent through Khalapur ghat, the car uses regenerative braking, which actually recovers a small amount of energy from the downhill run. There's less brake heat and the car feels planted and controlled through the curves.
