Best Time to Travel Pune to Mumbai by Cab — Traffic Guide 2025

Leave at the wrong time and the Pune–Mumbai drive takes 4 hours. Leave at the right time and you're there in 2.5. Here's the hour-by-hour breakdown of when to go — and when to stay put.

One thing to know upfront

GreenEVCabs charges ₹2,700 flat regardless of when you travel — no peak-hour surcharge, no surge pricing. But picking the right departure window can save you 1–1.5 hours of sitting in traffic, which is worth planning for.

The Pune–Mumbai Expressway (NH48) is 94 km of mostly smooth highway, but the traffic in Pune city and at the Mumbai end can turn a 2.5-hour trip into a 4-hour ordeal. The bottlenecks are predictable: IT parks in Hinjewadi, Wakad, and Baner create morning rush on weekdays; Friday evening sees heavy return traffic from Mumbai; and festival eves are the single worst days to travel.

Here's a practical breakdown of every time window so you can plan your departure accordingly.

Time-of-Day Traffic Guide (Weekdays)

Departure Time Traffic Level Expected Duration Notes
5:00–7:00am Light 2.0–2.5 hrs Best window. Before Pune IT park rush starts.
7:00–10:00am Heavy (Mon–Fri) 3.5–4.5 hrs IT park exodus from Hinjewadi, Wakad, Baner. Worst weekday window.
10:00am–12:00pm Moderate–Light 2.5–3.0 hrs Good window. Rush has cleared, afternoon hasn't built up.
12:00–2:00pm Moderate 2.5–3.0 hrs Lunch hour adds some Pune city traffic. Expressway itself is fine.
2:00–4:00pm Light 2.0–2.5 hrs Quietest afternoon slot. Recommended for non-morning travelers.
4:00–8:00pm Heavy 3.0–4.0 hrs Evening IT park return traffic, Mumbai end also congested.
8:00–10:00pm Moderate 2.5–3.0 hrs Traffic easing off. Good option for evening arrivals in Mumbai.
10:00pm–5:00am Very Light 2.0–2.5 hrs Night travel is fast. Good for early Mumbai flights.

The Three Best Departure Windows

Window 1: 5:30–7:00am

The single best window on weekdays. Pune's IT parks haven't woken up yet, the expressway is clear, and you can be in Mumbai in 2–2.5 hours. Ideal for morning meetings, early flights, or people who prefer to travel before the world gets going. GreenEVCabs drivers are available from 4am.

Window 2: 10:00am–12:00pm

The morning rush has cleared, and the afternoon school/office run hasn't started. A comfortable mid-morning departure that suits late risers or people with Mumbai afternoon meetings. Expect 2.5–3 hours.

Window 3: 2:00–4:00pm

Often the quietest time on the entire expressway. School pickups happen closer to city centres, so the Pune bypass and expressway are clear. Great for weekend travelers or those who prefer arriving in Mumbai during the business day.

Times to Avoid

Monday–Friday, 7:00–10:00am
The IT park exodus from Hinjewadi, Wakad, Baner, and Kharadi creates heavy traffic on the Pune ring road and Katraj-Dehu bypass. Even before you hit the expressway, you could be stuck for 45–60 minutes in Pune city itself.
Friday, 5:00–9:00pm
Friday evening is the worst single window of the week. Mumbai-to-Pune reverse migration and Pune office traffic combine. If you must travel Friday, go before 3pm or after 9pm.
Festival and long-weekend eves
The evenings before Diwali, Ganesh Visarjan, Holi, and any long weekend see the expressway at near-standstill. Add 2–3 hours to any estimate. If traveling during these periods, a 5am departure is your best bet.

Weekend Travel Patterns

Weekends have different patterns to weekdays. Saturday mornings before 9am are the best of the week — often faster than any weekday window. Saturday afternoons can be slow if there are big events or cricket matches in Mumbai. Sunday mornings before 10am are smooth. Sunday 4–9pm is the worst weekend window as Mumbai-to-Pune return traffic fills the expressway.

If you're going to Mumbai for a weekend trip and returning Sunday, leave Mumbai before 2pm or after 9pm to avoid the Sunday evening crawl.

About Expressway Toll Plazas

The Pune–Mumbai Expressway has two main toll plazas — Khalapur and Khopoli — plus the Mumbai entry toll. For a private car/cab, total toll charges come to approximately ₹530–580 for a one-way trip. GreenEVCabs includes all tolls in the ₹2,700 fare, so there are no surprises at the booths.

Toll plaza queues can add 5–10 minutes during peak hours if the FASTag lane is busy. During very heavy traffic periods (festival eves), toll plazas can back up significantly. Our drivers use FASTag lanes and know which plazas to approach from.

Common Questions

Does GreenEVCabs charge extra for early morning or late night?

No. The fare is ₹2,700 flat for Pune to Mumbai regardless of what time you book or travel. There is no night surcharge or peak-hour pricing.

Is there a toll on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway?

Yes — approximately ₹530–580 one-way for a cab/car, split across two main plazas (Khalapur and Khopoli) plus the Mumbai toll. This is included in GreenEVCabs' ₹2,700 fare.

What if there's an unexpected traffic jam mid-route?

Expressway jams are usually caused by accidents. Our drivers monitor live traffic and can advise. If there's a major accident closure, the old NH4 highway via Khopoli is the alternate route — it adds 30–45 minutes but avoids complete standstills.
